Black like me Essay A middle-aged white man from Mansfield Texas named John Howard Griffin is the main character and author of Black like Me. He was a man deeply committed to the cause of ending racial discrimination. In 1959, Griffin decided to take a pertinently extreme measure just to understand the plight of the black people. He underwent medical treatment to change the color of his skin and temporarily become a black man. Griffin’s experience was funded by George Levitan, the owner of Sepia, a black oriented magazine in return for an article about it. Griffin sets out for New Orleans. He finds a contact- Sterling Williams, an articulate, soft-spoken, and engaging shoe shiner. Along the way, Griffin experiences oppression, hardship, and prejudice. It is impossible to find a job, he is forbidden from ordering a drink at the soda fountain and he wasn’t allowed to use a restroom used by whites. Clerks refuse to cash his checks as well. Griffin travels to Alabama and into the Deep South and Mississippi and finds that the condition is even worse for blacks. He finds their condition alarming. Black communities seem defeated and run down. All day long, the word nigger† seems to echo everywhere he goes. After two months of a depressing life as a Black man, Griffin stops taking his medication and lightens his skin back to its original color. He notices that when he is a white man, whites treat him with respect and blacks treat him with suspicious fear; when he is a black man, blacks teat him with generosity and kindness and whites seem to look at him with contempt and hostility. The article is published in 1960 and he was called to do interviews. The article is published around the world and he receives both congratulatory mails and hateful reprisals. Mansfield consists of many racists so Griffin and his family moved to Mexico in August of that year. Griffin issues a plea for tolerance and understanding between the races so as to avoid the possible outbreak of terrible violence. II. A critique on the book Black like me is more of a memoir rather than a novel; it is an autobiographical memoir in particular. It springs out from the author’s real experiences as well as his personal opinions rather than from mere imaginations or artistic creativity. The book itself stared from a research project. Griffin ostensibly desires to experience hoe it is to be like a black man so that he may understand firsthand the hardships and obstacles that they encounter in their daily lives. The books main theme is racial discrimination. Griffin’s quest for equality and social justice led him to temporarily change his identity from a white man to a black one. This transition is one clear proof to the crucial importance of one’s skin color as a factor in determining one’s position in this world. Griffin writes about the hardships of finding shelter and food as a black man; the difficulties of cashing a check despite the fact that he didn’t change his identity; riding a bus or even just finding a restroom where blacks are allowed to use. Blacks and whites behave differently when in one another’s company. Whites look at blacks with contempt and hostility and blacks treat whites with suspicious fear. This behavior is different however when they are with their groups and just among themselves. They treat each other with respect, kindness and generosity. Neither race has an understanding of the other. Griffin’s Black like Me explores the themes of segregation, racism and the capacity of humans to love their fellowmen. In this novel, there is the presence of men who made a different stand. P. D. East, Sterling Williams, George Levitan, Adele Jackson, and Sam Gandy support Griffins advocacy; A proof that there is some goodness in this world. Black like me is a short book, but considered one of the finest pieces of literature ever produced. III. 3 incidents that I personally find interesting and why? †¢ When Griffin underwent a medical treatment – the ultraviolet radiation combined with oral medication to darken his skin pigmentation. I find it personally interesting because it is a rare occasion that a person will consider doing the same experiment as Griffin did. He did a pertinently extreme measure just to feel exactly how it is to be like a black man. The medical procedure that Griffin underwent is neither tested nor safe. He experienced pain and other side effects from his exposure to the ultraviolet as well as with the medication. †¢ When Griffin spends the day working on the shoe shine booth together with Williams and Joe and that they only have raccoon meat and rice eaten out of a tin can for their meals. The Ministry of Defence mainly objectives are to defend the UK of Great Britain and North Ireland and to strengthen them with stability and peace. Then seconded in line is the 1st Division which is a large military unit with normally around 15-20 thousand soldiers. In most armies, a division is usually separated between brigades or regiments. The division is big, but they also can be small a combined armed unit that can do independent operations. The 1st Division is at the top of the armed divisions in the United Kingdom and are 7th in the world, which are also in charge of the roles they give to the soldiers to set out their authority. The division is a defensive army that serves for Britain resilience and fights with a few brigades and other armies from other countries. Of course, a major-general is in charge of the 1st Division but is also aided by three other Brigades such as the 4th Mechanized Brigade (The Black Rats), the 20th Armoured Brigade (The Iron Fist), and the 7th Armoured Brigade (Desert Rats). Brigades are major tactical military units that are usually made up of 3-6 battalions. Brigades are equal to a large unit of regiments, with 2 more brigades it would then make up a division. Brigades are normally in infantries or armoured units. The 4th Mechanized Brigade is based in Yorkshire and does mostly operational missions within the north-east of England. They have 2 forces under its command which are the Army Cadet Force and the Combined Cadet Force. The 4th Mechanized Brigade is basically under the command of the 1st Division to train the 18 forces they have under their command but the one who is in charge of the Black rats is Brigadier Charlie Hebert who is a one-star officer. Sir Herbert is then responsible to retain the conduct and discipline of his armoured military sized unit. However as for the 20th Armoured brigade is different from the black rats, for starters even though they are a British army they are based in Germany but are looking to relocate their headquarters back to the United Kingdom in a few years to come. This brigade had its most recent operation in Iraq, and is not back in Germany but is aiding the Afghanistan army as for now. The 7th Armoured Brigade also called the Desert Rats and are quite similar with The Iron Fist even though the 7th Armoured Brigade were renamed into the 7th Infantry Brigade but still have the name the Desert Rats as its a nickname for the Brigade. For some reason their motto/shout out is Floreat jerboa which means in English; in the English translation Let the Desert Rats flourish. Regiments are a military unit that varies their role and size depending on their country and their armed service who have a smaller size of units that are then called a battalion. A battalion is also a military unit that consist of 300-800 soldiers. Battalions are mostly commanded by a lieutenant colonel. Even though a battalion is one small military organization they are still capable of independent operations that are limited. The lowest level someone could get in a battalion unit is either an executive officer or the support and service unit. The term company in the armed forces is used only when a private military made out of 4-10 soldiers are providing armed combat. Private Military Companys like to call their staff as security contractors or private contractors. On one isle are nails, and screws, the next isle there are power drills to go along with power saws and power sanders. Now imagine the world with no tools, no nails or screws. It would be pretty difficult to do most anything. We would have no houses to live in, no cars to travel to work in, and we would have no place of employment in which to work. Without tools our world would be nothing. This is the world our ancestors faced, and they had nothing but rocks and sticks. Homo Habilis had the challenge of being the first hominid with a larger brain, which allowed him to have the ability to do more things. With early hominids lacking size and strength to kill large animals they used certain objects to kill and devour these animals. This ultimately led to the development of tools. By 2.5 million years ago, a new human evolutionary trend had begun. The change to a upright bipedal posture, and existing flexibility at the shoulder, arms, and hands allowed hominids to carry and manipulate objects much more readily. Early hominids began to manipulate the physical world, inventing solutions to the problems of human existence. Instead of foraging, as do most primates, on a more or less individualistic basis for food sources, early hominids invented stone tools with which they could slay larger animals. This began a switch from scavenging to hunting as the main means by which meat was acquired. In fact according to Dr. Edmond Lee, instant noodles also contain high amounts of carbohydrates, sodium, MSG, and saturated fat. This is why we test the noodles for its water absorbency, because it is one of the factors that will show whether or not an instant noodle product is high in terms of oil-content. This is because oil and water do not mix when something is covered in oil water will not be ab le to pass through thus less water absorbency.We plan to test the water absorbency by drenching the noodles in water and measuring the amount of unabsorbed water left. By doing this we can help people choose the instant noodles with the least oil content, thus helping them prevent other sicknesses caused by the instant noodles, and helping them get as much nutrients as they can obtain. Furthermore, the community will be more informed as to the best brand of instant noodles with the assistance of this study.
